When the unthinkable happens--seven year old Nicholas is shot while sleeping in the back seat and declared "brain dead" at the hospital--the Greens awake an entire nation to the issue of organ donation. The film follows the Reg and Maggie Green as they look past their personal pain during the darkest of hours and decide to donate seven of Nicholas' organs, resulting in saving the lives of seven desperately ill strangers. The publicity from their actions leads to increased awareness and acceptance of organ donation in Italy--a country that has historically been resistant to the practice.
Airing on CBS in 1997, NICHOLAS' GIFT earned Jamie Lee Curtis an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress for her powerful performance as Nicholas' mother, Maggie Green. The Film was awarded the 1998 Silver Medal for New York Festivals and a 1999 Christopher Award for Outstanding Television Special. NICHOLAS' GIFT also proved to be a ratings blockbuster, finishing eighth out of 104 programs for the week it aired. The film was directed by Robert Markowitz and written by Christine Berardo.
